An Eye Witness Account of “House Calls on Congress” from Marty Mc

Several of us returned from DC late last night after participating in an amazing healthcare rally in DC. The rally was put on with three days notice. It was Thursday afternoon. It was challenging and inconvenient for many to get there but American citizens who recognize current plans for health care “reform” as not only disastrous for our healthcare system, but an attack on freedom, were there in force. Our group of five was overwhelmed by the numbers. There were young and old, retirees and 20 somethings, military, doctors and lawyers (working arm in arm believe it or not). There were folks from Canada asking us how we could allow government to destroy the gift we have and which supporters of current “reforms” fail top appreciate. All corners of the nation were represented. We have new friends from Washington, California, Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio. Families made late flight arrangements at great cost to come to DC, many with children in tow. Yes, a bunch of mobsters and hate mongers.

Many senior citizens were there. Several were in wheel chairs. Families carried carried chairs for elderly family members so that could sit during the rally which preceded our visits to the Senate and House Office buildings. We were called into service when a senior who hadn’t eaten and was up early that morning to get to DC became lightheaded and collapsed on the Capitol lawn. We assessed, assisted and cared for this wonderful woman who recovered after lying down on the grass and eating a bit. The EMTs were called and fully assessed her. As this was ongoing her daughter thanked us and said to me, in fierce anger, “I am livid that my mother felt she needed to come here for this event, that she felt her health and liberty were threatened by supposed representatives who would only listen if she journeyed here. And look what happens.”

It is difficult for me to estimate crowd size, but we filled the lawn back to the reflecting pool on the west side of the Capitol. A number of us agreed there were likely close to 25,000 people. It was a much bigger turnout than I think any reasonable person would have expected given the circumstances. The rally began with prayer, as it should. The Judeo-Christian tradition and belief in a benevolent Creator is the foundation of the American experiment. No one is required to worship in the Judeo-Christian tradition in this nation, nor should they be. On the Capitol lawn however, all bowed their heads in recognition at least of the sacred principles which have made this nation great and exceptional.

Then we took the halls of Congress. Coincidentally, perfectly timed with the end of our rally, the House was called back into session for a vote. Most of us never saw actual representatives. The staffs were polite but told us repeatedly that their boss was in a meeting or voting and they had no idea when they would be back. We probably should’ve checked the local drinking establishments or underneath their desks. We visited multiple offices, sat down and made ourselves comfortable, ate whatever unique state product they offered to visitors, signed their books and hand wrote our recommendations. It seems peanuts is as good as it gets for most of our NC offices. We had our fill, asked if they were expecting only elephants today.

Several callers to Nancy Pelosi’s office apparently walked in and ripped up the 1900 page bill. Not clear if the Speaker was even present but security was called and folks arrested. When we approached the Speaker’s Office there were several hundred folks in line, being ushered into the office to sign the Speakers book and speak briefly to her staff. There were eighteen security personnel that I counted. As we stood in line the chant began and resonated in the Halls of the Cannon Building…”Kill the Bill.” The hallways are cavernous and the echo was astounding. Security was concerned, flustered, and a little awe struck. I don’t think they are used to hearing such sound in those halls. It was the sound of freedom.

I wore my white coat. Many asked if I was a real doctor or a “Rose Garden” doctor. I assured them I was not from the government and I was here to help. Many thanked me profusely for being there. I thanked them for being there and embarrassingly apologized for the lack of obvious brother and sister physicians who should be leading this charge. I apologized that my profession had allowed things to get to this point and for the lack of medical warriors there to support them in their heroic efforts. Lastly I apologized to many seniors and many veterans. I apologized for the younger citizens who have forgotten the words of Ronald Reagan, if they ever heard them, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same”. It angered and sickened me to see veterans, worn by age, who have already paid the price for our freedom, pushing walkers as they are pressed back into service to protect their grown children from this gathering storm.

Paternalistic politicians who see great benefit and opportunity in an American citizenry completely dependent and enslaved by government have pulled an arrow from their quiver. HR 3962 will be voted on as early as today or tomorrow. Speaker Pelsoi has committed to keeping legislators in DC this weekend so as not to allow them to be exposed to the mobs…I mean citizens…at home. She is concerned, and she should be. Many legislators appear to be hearing the echoes in the halls. They have seen election results in NJ and Va which make it clear that patriotic Americans who believe in the exceptionalism of their nation are displeased with many of the people who supposedly represent them; and all well designed polls show that the majority of Americans do not support this legislation.

So, it is up to us. It always has been but we have become apathetic. Take to the phones, your keyboards, get in your cars and go to local reps offices or travel to DC this weekend if you can. Contact all on the following list of representatives. There boxes may be full. Call their local offices. These are legislators who seem to be thoughtful about this Bill and are not willing to walk the plank for legislation that is supported by elitist Democratic leadership but not the American people. Prioritize calling the House Reps. They will be voting any minute now. Please put serious effort into this. Twenty five thousand people travelled from across the country yesterday on a date that was likely inconvenient and at a cost which was certainly not budgeted. Now it is your turn. The nation’s future truly depends on what you do today and maybe tomorrow. Yes, be assured you may hear the same thing from me over the next few weeks when the Senate may be taking up this legislation.

Call your representatives as well as others sitting on the fence. Contact friends, neighbors, email lists and let them know how dire the situation is. The bill is horrible. I asked some standard basic questions yesterday. First, what gives Congress the authority to “reform” health care and mandate that people buy insurance? It simply appears unconstitutional. Sure, Congress has set up many things outside the bounds of their authority, like Medicare, but that doesn’t make it OK to keep doing until we are in complete servitude. Second, if this is such an emergency, why does HR 3962 not spend any money until 2013, and not get to full spending until 2019? Third, if this idea is so great, why does HR 3962 make the Congressional health plan exempt from the mandates that will be forced on the rest of the citizens? Yes, you heard right, Congress exempt from the mandates of HR 3962.

A very short list of some other worthy discussion points includes that the legislation likely costs at least $2.4 trillion for its first full 10 years of spending (not the partial accounting given by Dem leaders which says cost $894 billion), it will eliminate private payers, you cannot keep your current plan after five years (you will lose your current plan after year 1 if it is changed and does not conform to Insurance Exchange standards), it will cut Medicare by $500 billion, it will drive physicians out of medicine, it will ration not only because we can’t pay for it but because there will be fewer doctors, it clearly supports federal funding for abortion, and it establishes over 100 boards and panels with general and vague responsibilities related to all aspects of “health care”. This terminology is vital. “Health Care”, as opposed to “medical care”, includes every aspect of life which a board feels impacts your potential need to receive medical care. Fair game includes what you eat, drink, weigh, drive, listen to, read, with the possibility of penalties (taxes) applied for folks pursuing a less desirable lifestyle. Included in the latter group of boards is my favorite, the Comparative Effectiveness Board which will have responsibility to review and recommend methods, treatments, devices, and medications used to treat a variety of conditions.

Finally, this bill does nothing about tort reform. Amazingly the bill actually says that tort reform experiments can be tried in states but they will have funding cut if they attempt to cap settlement amounts or attorney fees! As a doctor, if you tell me you want to reform healthcare, but don’t seriously mention tort reform you are either not very bright or have real motives other than healthcare reform.

I would argue that health care is not the greatest emergency facing this nation, but it doesn’t matter. This process and bill has nothing to do with healthcare. It is about statists (Obama, Pelosi, Reid and others) determined to own an additional 17% of the GDP and increase dependence of the people on the federal government. As Reagan said, “Concentrated power has always been the enemy of liberty.”

To the phones, to the keyboards, to their offices…the vote this weekend is historic. What you do, or do not do, over the next several days will perpetually impact you and your loved ones.
