We lived in Stamford CT for 5 years ['76 -' 82] and I had the occasion to correspond with Bill Buckley a couple of times back then.
He always replied.
Once he answered a letter of mine while he was in Switzerland. I remember he included an apology that he’d fallen behind in his correspondence, and had taken certain correspondence to his winter retreat there to answer. I don’t believe I was ever more flattered.
Bill Buckley took my crummy letter to Switzerland? Amazing!
On another early evening I was encamped in the Admirals Club somewhere, probably Chicago, during a lengthy weather delay, and there he was alone in a corner, papers sprawled about,,,,, the appearance of an unmade bed.
I dared to approach him, and said something lamely about Stamford and being a subscriber to NR. He invited me to sit, which I did for a few minutes.
Aside from the state of the local weather, I can’t recall the content of our brief discussion. I do remember though, that he was extraordinarily cordial, interesting, learned, and funny, which, come to think of it, might also begin to describe his incomparable life.
May he rest in peace.
