A Thanksgiving Prayer

On this Thanksgiving, our national holiday dedicated to offering and declaring our thankfulness and reflections for our many God-given gifts, more than ever before, I ask, dear Lord, for your guidance and understanding. Never in my life as a citizen of this great nation, have I felt more fearful than hopeful.
I fear the greed of too many politicians that have lost and/or ignored their purpose as servants of the people – that are so consumed in their quest for power and advancement of their overtly counter-cultural and selfish personal beliefs, that service to their country and to their constituencies is rendered as an obscure afterthought – at best. They unflinchingly betray the very trust that well-intentioned Americans bestow upon them.
I fear the hideous and contemptible bias of the American mainstream media that thrives more on the naiveté than the trust of Americans – certainly not on the ethics of the once honorable profession of journalism. Rather than dispense information as a service so that the masses can derive their own opinions, the MSM seeks to omit, distort, and manufacture information in order to formulate opinion. There was a time when we were taught that this was known as propaganda.
I fear the decay of our academia, another once honored profession that has seemingly forgotten, if not abdicated, it’s purpose in teaching people, particularly our youth, how to learn. Rather than allowing students to formulate their own opinions and convictions, they infuse their own beliefs and biases and disguise them as “the right answers”. Though it is a scandal, it is certainly not a mystery why so many people today leave the institutions of formalized learning with no understanding of factual history, an awareness of or interest in current events, an understanding of our Constitution, the ability to effectively convey their thoughts in writing, the ability to read, the desire to read, and a thirst for continued learning. We are breeding ignorance and apathy – not citizenship.
I fear the moral dereliction of the “entertainment” industry – TV, movies, print media, video games, etc. – that ironically survive by their inexcusable debasement of our constitutional freedoms. It has literally become a battle for the foundational soul of the American public – a soul driven by God-given rights to, dignity, respect, and freedoms versus one driven by an addiction to personal gratification and moral bankruptcy. Combined with a corrupt mainstream media, the moral perversion of the entertainment industry seeks to hijack our American culture.
I fear an unwillingness to defend this sacred nation. People do not flock to this country only to acquire wealth – most fundamentally, they seek the freedom to live and grow and not be encumbered by a government that denies their most basic freedoms. But too many among us are blind to the price of not only maintaining our freedoms, but also to those that threaten to destroy or compromise those freedoms – both from within and outside our borders. The entitlement mentality may be our worst form of cancer – if we don’t recognize it soon, we will succumb and be reduced to the weak stature of so many other nations on this planet – and by the time we recognize the cancer, it will be too late. Hope and change will have been reduced to what many knew from the beginning – shallow words.
And I fear a refusal to recognize, honor, and preserve our Judeo-Christian heritage. As a nation, we have abdicated not only our belief in the foundation of our heritage, but the tolerance of it as well. We have allowed God to be removed from too many aspects of our traditions and institutions – all for the sake of appeasing the desires of a few. It is that heritage that has been a mainstay in differentiating our success and elevation as a nation and in creating stalwart individuals – to ignore or deny it will cause our foundation to crumble – it is our greatest strength.
Despite these fears, I humbly give thanks, dear Lord, for those blessings which have been bestowed upon us – our family, our friends, our health, our homes, our general welfare, and, of course, our nation. Though our nation struggles to define its identity and direction, I believe in your ability to provide us with the wisdom to guide us along the right path. As much as we as individuals and as a nation have forsaken your very existence, now more than ever do we require your presence in our every thought, action, and lives. Give us the strength to act in Jesus’ name. Amen
Happy Thanksgiving to All of You and Your Families,
By Rick who is On the Right Side of the Issues
