A Deficit Of Decency

Politics: Does being a Democrat justify glee at putting Republican opponents in al-Qaida’s cross hairs? Or does it mean a green light to make ethnic slurs? Both occurred last week, minus apologies.

If that seems strong, consider how a House subcommittee hauled in David Addington, Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff, for a taste of the third degree on waterboarding.

Rep. Bill Delahunt, who isn’t even on the subcommittee, took his shot anyway, asking Addington about the interrogation method. Addington balked, explaining that the hearings were being broadcast on C-SPAN and terrorists watching might use the information.

“Well, I’m sure they are watching, and I’m glad they finally have the chance to see you, Mr. Addington,” Delahunt said with a smile.

Can Delahunt play that back for us, why he’s so “glad”?

Here he just made a Bush administration official a target of terrorists and was actually smiling as he did it.

What was Delahunt’s motive? Maybe his Bush Derangement Syndrome is so acute that he likes the idea of putting Addington in harm’s way, a common theme among some Democrats who openly express violent fantasies about Bush.

Or perhaps Delahunt believes the war on terror is so unserious — despite the reality that a 9/11 attack occurred in Washington — that he felt justified in belittling Addington’s concern.

Whatever it was, it showed a trivial mind focused hardest on politicizing the terror war instead of on our national interest.
