Ramos & Compean Update

There are currently 102 cosponsors of H.R. 563. We need another 116 signatures until we can move a discharge petition. Unfortunately, the democrats have been very slow to sign on to the bill. If people want to help they should continue to contact members of Congress (primarily democrats) and ask that they sign on to the legislation. At the first of August, Mr. Hunter and a number of other members wrote the president again, associating themselves with Senator Feinstein and Senator Cornyn who called for the President to commute the agents’ sentences.

In addition, during consideration of the House Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations bill for FY2008, Mr. Hunter and Mr. Poe offered an amendment to prohibit any funds be made available to the Department of Justice for the purpose of incarcerating the two agents. The amendment passed the House by voice vote and now awaits consideration by the House-Senate conference committee. Mr. Hunter will be working with his colleagues to try and retain the language in the appropriations bill.

Finally, several members are working to send a letter to Attorney General Nominee Mukasey asking him, upon his Senate confirmation, to open a Department of Justice investigation in to the prosecution of the agents. Please be assured that Mr. Hunter continues to work with his colleagues to try and find a way to address the injustice imposed on these two Border Patrol agents.

Respectfully,
Roy Tyler
Communications Director

Duncan Hunter for President
