Lewis Scooter Libby’s Conviction

The Right Truth Blog has a good summary of comments about the conviction of Scooter Libby and I would like to add my two cents worth also.

What I find disturbing about this whole case is that we have a special prosecutor creating a crime when he knew that no crime was committed. Special Prosecutor Peter Fitzgerald knew who leaked Valerie Plame’s name from the moment he took on the case three years ago and it wasn’t any one related to the White House. He spent three years and about fifteen million dollars investigating a non crime. If you wonder why, so do I?

I think the answer lies in Fitzgerald closing statement to the jury when he focused on VP Cheney and the White House. Fitzgerald could not contain his partisanship to discredit the administration.

So what we have here is Fitzgerald has established a new low in the political arena by this case which is the criminalization of politics. While the left is celebrating the conviction today, they will rue the day that politics have gone down this road, for he is without sin can only cast the first stone.

I heard two things today that I thought where particularly disturbing …..

First was Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid calling on President Bush to commit that he wouldn’t pardon Scooter Libby. Some people don’t know when enough is enough and to leave it alone especially when you have a track record a mile long of shady real estate deals. Does Dirty Harry think he is untouchable? A man’s life has been wrecked for no reason at all but that doesn’t seem to be enough for Harry.

Secondly, I happen to catch Randi Rhodes on Air America and she stated, (paraphrase) that Scooter Libby was convicted for leaking a CIA agent’s name. Now Rhodes is either a complete idiot because nothing could be further from the truth. I will assume that her I.Q. is a point above idiot grade and she was indulging in spinning the spin. As long as we have people like Randi Rhodes the partisan divide will grow deeper.

Can Kennedy Be More Hypocritical?

Today Scooter Libby was found guilty of perjury and obstruction of justice stemming from a witch hunt. I have already indicated that George Bush should pardon him. Not only would it be appropriate but it would tick off the left. Senator Ted Kennedy has weighed in on the matter:

“President Bush should now pledge that he will not pardon Scooter Libby,” scolded Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy shortly after Libby was convicted Tuesday of obstructing justice and lying to investigators. NewsMax

Leave it to Ted Kennedy to say that Libby should be in jail when this bloated jackass was never held accountable for killing Mary Jo Kopechne. Teddy laid on the bridge in a fetal position crying about how this would hurt his political career.

I’ll have more to say about this Scooter Libby verdict in the days ahead, but having just watched one of the jurors on MS-NBC, Denis Collins, it’s clear that they bought into the MSM theory that this trial had something to do with the way in which the evil Bush administration “lying us into war.”

Tune into the show tonight for more commentary and juicy soundbites. Suffice it to now that this whole spectacle has been a disgrace from the git-go. It never had anything to do with the liberals’ fantasy of some effort to discredit Joe Wilson or the supposed “covert” status of his wife Valerie Plame. That’s like saying someone trying to damage Paris Hilton’s reputation. Joe Wilson is a preening, prevaricating pantload whose many lies (VP Cheney sent me to Niger, I debunked the British claims that Saddam was attempting to get yellowcake from Niger, the Bush administration say my report, the documents were forgeries) are well-documented.

Brace yourselves, kids: the Old Media will be celebrating this verdict BIG TIME and while they do, they will continue to lie about what this verdict is about.

One more thing: note to democrats—the president doesn’t need any advice from you about how to exercise his executive powers, either in granting pardons or conducting the war, so PULEEZE put a sock in it.

Scooter Libby is convicted in the Plame leak case. The man who actually did the leaking continues to earn millions of dollars, go out to dinner, and be respectfully quoted by attentive journalists.

Bill Bennett adds….

What we know is this: Guilty on four out of five counts is bad. But at the same time, we may have just seen the latest and most dramatic example of a troublesome trend of the times in which we live: the criminalization of politics.

The word “guilty” had barely crossed the airwaves yesterday in the perjury case of Scooter Libby before critics were calling it proof that President Bush “lied us into war” and demanding that Dick Cheney be strung up next. Maybe now Mr. Bush will realize that this case was always a political fight over Iraq and do the right thing by pardoning Mr. Libby. – more from The Wall Street Journal

So what was this all about? Scoring points against Bush.

That much is obvious, given prosecutor Fitzgerald’s conduct during Libby’s trial.

It’s not just that his closing argument was blatantly political, charging that Libby’s boss, Vice President Dick Cheney, had orchestrated the leak of Plame’s name in order to discredit her husband.

In fact, Fitzgerald throughout the case seemed to violate a central rule set down by the judge: Valerie Plame Wilson’s actual status at the CIA was wholly irrelevant to the charges against Libby. Whether or not she was a covert agent – meaning disclosure of her name might be a crime – didn’t matter. More from The New York Post

the prospect of fewer high quality public servants. Those offered posts in government will, before accepting a position, have to weigh the risk that they will be turned into criminals for carrying out routine tasks such as talking to reporters for the purpose of defending their president’s policies. And the press – one of the biggest losers in this case – will suffer for years from the spectacle that was laid before the public during the trial of Scooter Libby. – more from The New York Sun
