Noon Update: The Foley Fallout By the Bear

I checked out Tradesport on Monday to see how the futures market reacted to the Foley scandal.

(InTrade is the largest betting market. It has almost 4 million in capitalization and expanding exponentially.)

At the end of the first week of September Republicans were trading 36 (which means a 36% chance of holding the House). Around the 19th of September Republicans were trading at 52 and this rose to 58 on the 28th of the month. On Monday October 2, the Republicans were trading at a low of 47.5.

On the Senate race the Republicans were trading at 80.

But getting back to the House race, the Foley scandal has given the market concerns over the Republican chances of holding the House which caused the 12 point drop in a few days. The concern is not political as the traders do not care who wins, it based on chances to win. (Money, Money, Money)

The Foley seat in the House was a given win for the Republicans until the scandal hit and now it looks like a loss. In the upcoming November Election, a Foley loss puts the Democrats one seat closer to gaining a majority in the House in what should be a closely contested race.

The Democrats need a swing of 15 seats to regain the majority in the House and we now can make that 14. When this is over and done with a couple of seats will determine the majority.

As I have said many times before, you don’t know what future Uncontrollable Unknown Events may determine the outcome, the Foley scandal surely points this out.

SideBear: But if you want a sure bet, I give you one. You can expect to see several more bombshells dropped in the next couple of weeks like George Allen and the “N” word plus the well timed release of Bob Woodward’s new book slamming the administration.

These are no accidents; they are orchestrated political smears in a campaign season.

“Simon & Schuster and my bosses at the Washington Post said the only real obligation here is to tell it before the election” -Bob Woodward

But why would the Washington Post want Woodward’s book published shortly before the election? Theoretically, the folks at the Post are journalists, which means that they should only care about reporting the story, not releasing it at a specific point in the election cycle. The fact that the Post felt Woodward had “an obligation” to publish before the election implies that the paper wanted to affect the election; if the reaction of the voters was of no concern to the Post, it really wouldn’t matter whether the book was released before or after the election.- Evan Coyne Maloney

The Washington Times Pulls A McCain On Hastert

Maybe the Washington Times thinks the Democratic Party is going to take over in November and they want to get on their good side or maybe they just want to hold their heads high for once when they go to DC cocktail parties with their liberal pals. But, whatever the motivation behind it may be, the editorial that the Times wrote demanding that Dennis Hastert step down in response to the way the Foley scandal was handled is completely and utterly irrational. Here’s a taste:

Just in case you’re wondering, “Pulling a McCain,” means to criticize a fellow conservative or Republican, undeservedly, for no other reason than to try to score points with liberals.

Phase Two of the Foley Scandal

We are now entering the next phase of the Foley Scandal …..

WHO KNEW WHAT AND WHEN?

The Republican leadership claims they did not hear the sorted e-mails until just last week.

We now know that a small internet site by a mystery blogger which receives backing from George Soros related entities got the Foley e-mails back in July. The question now becomes who gave them the e-mails?
