“Paper or plastic?”

In mid-December, 1944 at THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE two German officers and two enlisted men walked up a snow-covered road under a white flag of truce to an Army check point. The Germans carried an ultimatum from their commander in the sector, General von Luttwitz. It insisted that there “was only one possibility to save the encircled U.S.A. troops from total annihilation: that is, the honorable surrender of the encircled town.” It gave the American commander two hours to consent or German guns would “annihilate” the U.S. forces and level Bastogne.
An American officer delivered the note to General McAuliffe and his chief of staff, Lieutenant Colonel Ned Moore, McAuliffe wrote out a formal reply. In words that have since become legendary, it exclaimed: “To the German Commander: NUTS! From the American Commander.”
I sure that if General McAuliffe was here today and saw this sign, he would say something very similar and he would undoubtedly question the sanity of the American couture today.

The AP is reporting that a program operating near Richmond, VA sponsored by the Virginia Interfaith Center is raising eyebrows and causing some members of the citizenry to worry that secret Terrorist messages are being left across the city.
These signs bearing black Arabic script have been appearing all over town on buses and at colleges. When people see Arabic, they immediately make an association with terrorism.
Supposedly, the translation of the sign means…. “Paper or plastic”
The signs were placed in all 170 Greater Richmond Transit Company buses in Richmond on Nov. 27 and will remain there through the end of December, though many buses will continue to display them at least through the end of January. The signs, designed by The Martin Agency, have also been posted at the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University.
A spokesperson from Greater Richmond Transit Company issued the following statement…..

“It’s so great that we’re getting feedback, even if it is negative, because it shows that people are looking, they’re thinking.”
Thinking?! How about scared!

Ads Hope to Dispel Fears of Muslims
Bias against the Muslim community is a continuing problem across the country, said Imad Damaj, president of the Virginia Muslim Coalition for Public Affairs.
“There’s so many lazy, unexamined assumptions about all of us and how we react to people,” Damaj said. “We need to challenge ourselves.”
The ad push is one of the latest efforts to dispel stereotypes of Muslims and Arabic speakers. In 2004, the Council on American-Islamic Relations launched a nationwide TV and radio campaign, featuring Muslims from different backgrounds, each ending with the slogan, “I am an American Muslim.”
