Scooter Libby evidently lied

to the FBI and the grand jury about how and when he learned that Valerie Plame worked at the CIA, which he shouldn’t have done. But the indictment strikes me as pretty lame. There apparently was no underlying crime, so it’s a mystery to me why Libby should have lied.

The Libs have to be disappointed, since only Libby was indicted. A new grand jury will be empanelled, so Rove isn’t off the hook, technically, but Fitzgerald indicated in his news conference that his investigation essentially is over, as it ought to be after two years.

We conservatives ran off half cocked in both directions in the Miers affair, and we shouldn’t do that now. Andy McCarthy, a straight up guy and a good conservative who knows Fitzgerald says he’s honest, so we shouldn’t be pre-emptively attacking him, as Sean Hannity already is. And we can’t bitch about Bill Clinton lying to a grand jury if we’re prepared to let Scooter skate for the same offense. But what Fitzgerald had to say in his news conference about national security being endangered in the Plame Name Game was a crock, and we’d better be prepared to fight back against the criminalization of conservatism.

I find it interesting that we still don’t know who told Novak about Plame. The only reporter Libby talked to before Novak published his story was Miller, and she didn’t write about Plame.

This quote, from the WSJ Oct. 24th (hat tip: free republic) pretty much sums up the situation:

“Mr. Wilson’s original claims about what he found on a CIA trip to Africa, what he told the CIA about it, and even why he was sent on the mission have since been discredited. What a bizarre irony it would be if what began as a politically motivated lie by Mr. Wilson nonetheless leads to indictments of Bush Administration officials for telling reporters the truth.” …
